32BJ SEIU Applauds Supreme Court’s Upholding of Birthright Citizenship
The following statement may be attributed to Manny Pastreich, President 32BJ SEIU:
“The Supreme Court’s reaffirmation that those born in the U.S. are guaranteed citizenship is a victory for the unity and determination of people of all races and birthplaces who have organized to defend this basic Constitutional right. The principle is so clearly stated in the 14th Amendment that it has never faced this level of challenge, even during our nation’s darkest days of anti-immigrant sentiment over the past 150 years. The fact that the administration was able to bring the case all the way to a disturbingly receptive Supreme Court speaks to clearly racist notions of who can be an American.
“Even as we celebrate this decision, we must also continue fighting for the rights of all our nation’s residents. The dangerous mistreatment of immigrants continues to unfold with the support of the Supreme Court majority, including in their recent decision empowering the administration to potentially strip over a million longstanding immigrants of their legal status through the baseless ending of TPS designations. As one of the nation’s largest majority-immigrant unions, our relief today renews our determination to continue our fight for permanent protections for TPS holders and a path for citizenship, along with our fight for the rights of all working people.”
