Assemblyman Kenyatta Stewart Hosts District 35 Town Hall, Honors Community Leaders for Service and Leadership

PATERSON, NJ — Yesterday, Assemblyman Kenyatta Stewart (D-Bergen, Passaic) welcomed residents from across Legislative District 35 for a community town hall focused on constituent concerns, legislative priorities, and the future of the district. The event brought together residents from across District 35 for an open conversation on the upcoming state budget, affordability, housing, and quality of life. Senator Benjie Wimberly and Assemblyman Al Abdelaziz joined as special guests.
The town hall also served as an opportunity to recognize several individuals and public servants whose leadership and service continue to make a meaningful impact throughout the district.
Among those honored was Surrogate Judge Zoila Cassanova, recognized for her commitment and service to the community. Assemblyman Stewart also honored retired Army Sergeant Cesar Cespedes, who was
recommended by Haledon Mayor Michael Johnson, who was also in attendance.
Assemblyman Stewart also recognized members of the Elmwood Park Police Department Community Policing Unit — Lieutenant Tom Kochis, Officer Jimmy Rivera, and Officer Steve Araujo — for their continued work strengthening trust between law enforcement and the community through neighborhood engagement and partnership. The recognition followed a recommendation from Councilman Joseph Oswald, who was also in attendance. Keith Watson was also honored for his advocacy and ongoing contributions to the community.
“This town hall was about bringing government directly to the people and creating space for honest conversation around the issues impacting families across our district,” said Assemblyman Stewart. “It was equally important to recognize individuals who go above and beyond every day to serve others. Judge Casanova, Sergeant Cespedes, the Elmwood Park Community Policing Unit, and Keith Watson each represent the very best of leadership, service, and commitment to community.”
Throughout the evening, Stewart and Abdelaziz took questions directly from the residents about the state budget and efforts to address affordability and constituent services.
“Our work doesn’t stop after Election Day,” Stewart added. “Town halls like this are an opportunity to listen, answer questions directly, and stay connected to the people we represent. My commitment remains simple: to be present, to be accessible, and to keep delivering for every community in District 35.”
