CITY OF NEWARK LIFTS CURFEW AND DESIGNATED FREE SPEECH ZONES EFFECTIVE 9 P.M. TONIGHT, TUESDAY, JUNE 2
Newark, NJ – June 2, 2026— Mayor Ras J. Baraka today announced that the curfew and designated free speech zones established in response to recent events surrounding Delaney Hall will be lifted effective at 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, June 2.
“After last night’s protest without a single arrest, we are lifting this curfew to allow full expression of the American right to free speech and to peacefully assemble,” said Mayor Baraka. “In this spirit, I have full confidence in the ability of the Delaney Hall protesters to operate in a manner worthy of the innocent people incarcerated and mistreated by ICE and the for-profit imprisoners at Geo Group. I have faith in the policies and training of our community-focused police officers and our extended public safety ecosystem for violence prevention. The world is watching. Let us put our focus on the compassion care of each other as we strive for the liberty and wellbeing of those inside Delaney Hall.”
The City of Newark remains committed to protecting civil rights, advocating for humane treatment, and maintaining public safety.
