Cornered by Gloucester Township Republicans, Cappelli Backpedals on the Taxpayers' Dime. Still No Apology, Still No Answers on Taxes.

BLACKWOOD, NJ — One week after Gloucester Township Republicans called him out, Camden County Commissioner Director Lou Cappelli Jr. finally answered, and it wasn't with an apology. On the morning of October 22, he used Camden County's official, taxpayer-funded X account to push out a statement doubling down on his attacks on the President.

Last week, Cappelli wrote that President Trump "has to be taken out of office one way or another." Today, after a week of public backlash, he is suddenly insisting removal should happen "only through legal actions," adding "Period, full stop," and claiming "at no time" did he mean anything else. That is a walk-back, plain and simple. But Cappelli doesn't have the decency to call it one. There is no retraction, no apology, and he vows to keep going "regardless of who likes it or not."

Cappelli didn't clear the air. He was forced to clean up his own mess, and he did it badly.

Even worse, he did it on the public's dime. A partisan attack on the President of the United States, with a plug for his own radio appearance, was posted on the official government account of Camden County, an account paid for and maintained with taxpayer dollars, in the closing days of his own re-election campaign. County government channels exist to tell residents about road closures, services and emergencies. They are not Lou Cappelli's personal campaign megaphone. Gloucester Township Republicans call on the Camden County Board of Commissioners to explain who authorized this post and why county resources are being used to carry the Director's political crusade.

And in a statement packed with Vladimir Putin, Joseph Stalin, Ukraine and "western civilization," there is not one word about the people Cappelli actually works for:

• Not one word about Camden County having the fourth-highest property taxes of more than 3,100 counties in America.
• Not one word about Gloucester Township, where Democrat Mayor Dave Mayer held taxes flat in his 2025 election year and then raised the municipal tax levy 13.96 percent, $8.5 million, in 2026.
• Not one word about utility bills that keep climbing for families across New Jersey.
• Not one word about out-of-control spending in a county his party has run for decades.
Lou Cappelli can find the time to write about Stalin. He cannot find the time to write about your tax bill.

"Director Cappelli had a chance to speak directly to Camden County families, and he chose to talk about everything except what they're struggling with," said Elizabeth Pfeffer, Chairwoman of the Gloucester Township Republicans. "Families here are worried about their property taxes, their utility bills, and whether they can afford to stay in the community they love. They deserve a county leader who spends his energy on lowering their costs. Our residents are still waiting for him to address the issues that matter in their homes."

"We made Lou Cappelli answer, and he still couldn't bring himself to say two words: I'm sorry," said Tom Crone, Executive Director of the Gloucester Township Republicans. "He's a sitting commissioner and a practicing attorney. He knew exactly what 'one way or another' meant when he wrote it, and now that he's been caught, he wants to rewrite history using a county account that taxpayers pay for. That's not leadership. It's cowardice dressed up as conviction. He'll write a whole paragraph about Stalin, but he can't write one sentence about the fourth-highest property taxes in America or the 13.96 percent levy hike his fellow Democrat Dave Mayer dropped on Gloucester Township. Cappelli and Mayer don't want you looking at your tax bill, so they point at Washington. We're not letting them. Every dollar of this mess has a Democrat's name on it, and on November 3, Camden County voters can send them the bill."

The Gloucester Township Republicans renew their demand that Director Cappelli fully retract his original statement, apologize to the people of Camden County, and stop using county government resources to wage his personal political battles.

Cappelli's statement proves one thing: Camden County Democrats cannot defend their own record, so they won't even mention it. They've controlled the county, the township and the State House for a generation, and all they have left are distractions, excuses and someone else to blame. Gloucester Township Republicans will keep forcing them to answer for it.
