Impact Research Polling Memo: Solomon Beating McGreevey

A Nov. 13th Impact Research Poll of likely voters in Jersey City’s December 2nd runoff election for Mayor shows Councilman James Solomon – who came in first place in the first-round vote despite being outspent by his opponents – with a wide and expanding lead over former Governor Jim McGreevey. Solomon is personally popular, enjoying support across the city’s diverse electorate and from the overwhelming majority of the supporters of the candidates who did not advance to the runoff, and is strongly positioned for victory.

Key Findings
- Solomon enjoys a wide and growing lead over Jim McGreevey. Solomon leads among likely runoff voters by nearly 30 points (58% to 29%, 13% undecided). This represents remarkable growth since July, when a previous poll found Solomon ahead of McGreevey by 8 points (46% to 38%, 16% undecided), underscoring how Solomon’s campaign has effectively built a broad coalition with wide appeal across the city. In the runoff, Solomon leads McGreevey by +38 percentage points with white voters, +36 percentage points with Latino voters, and even +18 percentage points with Black voters.

- Solomon is the overwhelming favorite among supporters of the candidates who did not make the runoff. Among voters who sided with candidates other than Solomon or McGreevey in the first round, Solomon leads by a whopping +57 points (71% to 14%). Specifically, he leads by +55 points with Bill O’Dea’s voters, and +63 points with Mussab Ali’s voters.
