Morris Jewish Caucus Sets the CD-11 Record Straight

One of the continuing political allegations against Rep. Analilia Mejia in CD-11 is that she is "anti-Semitic."

That has been the contention of Republican Joe Hathaway since he began running against her in the April special election.

That view appeared to gather some momentum this week when news surfaced that the Jewish caucus of the Morris County Democratic Committee has not endorsed her reelection.

Hathaway jumped on that, saying on social media:

"Let that sink in. Her own party's Jewish caucus won't endorse her."

All this sounds politically juicy, but then again ... maybe not.

Here is a statement from Jason Navarino, the caucus chair.

"Much is being made of something that wasn't said, so allow me to set the record straight.  Tuesday night's email to caucus members was not intended as a snub against anyone.  We chose to focus our attention on several particular races, including competitive House and county races and local ones with terrific Jewish candidates on the ballot.  We did not choose to focus on a race where the MAGA-supporting, Trump-enabling Republican candidate was overwhelmingly rejected by the voters just several months ago.  We have no reason to expect a different result next week.

No one should construe our omission of CD-11 from the email as an endorsement of Joe Hathaway.  Quite the contrary.  A vote for Hathaway is a vote for Mike Johnson as speaker, and continuing to rubber stamp the Trump agenda.  That agenda not only undermines Jewish values, but also Jewish safety.  For instance, this administration is trying to condition continued security funding for synagogues and Jewish schools on cooperation with the Gestapo-like tactics of ICE.  Congresswoman Mejia opposes what ICE is doing.  Joe Hathaway's presence in Congress would allow it to continue unabated.  A Democratic majority in Washington is critical so we can right the wrongs of the Trump administration and move our country forward."
