New Jersey Democrats under former Gov. Phil Murphy intentionally concealed the fact that the state Motor Vehicle Commission illegally registered 6,600 non-citizens to vote, a cover-up that should be prosecuted says Assemblyman Greg McGuckin.
“According to Gov. Sherrill, the Murphy administration knew about these illegally registered voters in 2024 and did nothing. New Jersey deserves to know which public officials conspired to hide this and why Sherrill isn’t naming names,” McGuckin said.
Sherrill revealed Tuesday that a software error in the MVC’s system under the Murphy administration led to the registration of roughly 6,600 people who indicated that they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024, and that 400 of them cast ballots.
McGuckin questioned the timing of her public announcement, which follows a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice against New Jersey Secretary of State Dale Caldwell for refusing to disclose the state’s voter registration records to the federal government.
“Now we know why the Sherrill administration is trying so hard to hide New Jersey’s voter rolls from the Department of Justice. It is no coincidence that the Governor came clean only after the DOJ subpoenaed New Jersey voter records,” McGuckin added.
The Ocean County lawmaker added that automatic voter registration at the MVC must be suspended and the Democrats responsible for hiding the illegal voter registrations must be prosecuted.
“When you’re in a hole, the first thing you do is stop digging. Automatic voter registration must be suspended immediately,” he said. “While I question whether this was really just a mistake in the first place, the fact is that for the last three years New Jersey Democrats have been conspiring to prevent the public from knowing about it. That was intentional, that was a cover-up and that should be prosecuted.”
