Statement by Governor Sherrill on New Jersey’s First World Cup Matches
“Two games down and six to go! It has been incredibly rewarding to see years of preparation pay off this week as New Jersey officially welcomed more than 150,000 fans from around the globe for the first matches of the FIFA World Cup. The tournament is off to a great start in the Garden State.
“Communities across New Jersey are feeling the energy and excitement of the World Cup, with fans filling our downtowns to experience the hospitality, diversity, and spirit that make our state special. Across every region of New Jersey, residents and visitors alike have gathered in our fan zones to celebrate the beautiful game and keep the festivities going beyond the final whistle.
“Our transportation system is rising to the occasion, moving fans safely and efficiently throughout the region, and we are working with all our partners so the tremendous challenge of World Cup transportation continues to get more efficient and effective. I’m pleased that NJ TRANSIT has delivered quality service, helping tens of thousands of fans travel to and from MetLife Stadium for each match while keeping our broader transportation network running smoothly. I appreciate the partnership of Uber and other rideshare services, in addition to the Host Committee, in creating a strong, coordinated transportation effort with NJ TRANSIT, which remains the best option for matchday travel.
“I want to particularly thank the dedicated transit workers, law enforcement officers, first responders, and local partners whose efforts have helped ensure a successful and safe start to this historic event. We look forward to building on this momentum as New Jersey continues to welcome the world and prepares to host the World Cup Final.”
