Statement from the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce on the Passing of Former Governor Richard J. Codey

The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce mourns the passing of former Governor Richard J. Codey, a New Jersey icon and one of the most dedicated public servants in our state’s history.

Governor Codey worked closely with the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce throughout his career in public service, including during his time as Acting Governor, Senate Majority Leader, and State Senator. He was a thoughtful and accessible leader who consistently listened to the business community and welcomed ideas focused on economic growth, job creation, and strengthening New Jersey’s competitiveness.

Governor Codey was a familiar and valued presence at New Jersey Chamber events over many years. He frequently attended our annual Walk to Washington and Congressional Dinner, speaking as governor and riding our train on numerous occasions. He was also a regular guest speaker at our legislative issues breakfasts, where he engaged directly with business leaders and policymakers on the challenges and opportunities facing our state.

In recognition of his commitment to pro-business engagement and policies, then-Senator Codey was a recipient of the New Jersey Chamber’s Legislative and Business Award, honoring leaders who work collaboratively with the business community to move New Jersey forward.

Governor Codey’s legacy is defined by service. He spent fifty years in the New Jersey Legislature – the longest tenure in state history – and led with humility, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility to the people of New Jersey. His impact on our state, its economy, and its institutions will be felt for generations.

This is a tremendous loss for New Jersey. The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce extends its deepest condolences to Governor Codey’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Tom Bracken, President & CEO, New Jersey Chamber of Commerce
