Resign today - or else?

Well, there really wasn't an "or else" in the governor's Thursday night (more about the timing later) statement about Dale Caldwell.

"I'm calling for his resignation and giving him until tomorrow

(Friday) to do so," Mikie Sherrill said in a statement.

What if he doesn't quit?

The governor's office was silent on that topic when asked about it Thursday night.

So, the drama is building.

That's because Caldwell seems to be digging in. A statement from his lawyer debunked the allegations against him and Caldwell himself is making his race an issue.

The following is from a letter he wrote when the investigation against him began.

"While I am troubled by this accusation, as the first single black man to serve at this level in government, I suspect that there will be other false accusations or rumors in the future. Unfortunately, in this current political environment, false accusations, especially against people of color, seem to be commonplace."

It's hard to grasp what he means by "this current political environment."

Is he referring to the state of the nation under Donald Trump, or the Sherrill Administration?

Something else that must be mentioned is how the governor made this announcement.

The report was released after 7 p.m.

John DiMaio, the Assembly Republican Leader, criticized the after hours release of the report and he has a point.

The governor said once during the campaign that she was committed to "radical transparency."

Issuing a report in the evening and not being available to talk about it is not much transparency at all.

One does recall that after Bridgegate surfaced, Chris Christie had a press conference that seemingly lasted forever.

All scandals give rise to their own expressions or catch words.

Recall how Jim McGreevey allegedly gave his blessing to a shady deal by saying, "Machiavelli."

And regarding Bridgegate, who could forget the message "Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee?"

This burgeoning scandal may top them all in regard to memorable verbiage.

The report says Caldwell allegedly told a staffer:

"You young women are looking for young sperm."
