Sources: Prieto to Sports and Expo; Assembly Reorg Set for Monday

The Freeholder fight unites more than it delights.

Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32) made the ask to go to the Sports and Exposition Authority, according to Democratic Party sources, and appears to have a receptive front office-elect after a meeting yesterday with Phil Murphy.

An Assembly reorganization session has been scheduled for Monday.

Later today, at a noon session, the senate appears set to reaffirm Steve Sweeney as Senate President and Tom Kean, Jr. as Senate Minority Leader.

Prieto to Sports and Expo (a $250K-per year job) appears to be the plan, but the relationship the outgoing speaker has with Sweeney is so deteriorated that he would only be able to get the job and avoid the invocation of senatorial courtesy, if Murphy presented a larger deal that was beneficial to Sweeney, a source told InsiderNJ.*

If Murphy backs the move – in part as a friendly gesture to ease Prieto out of the indignity of his current circumstances – driving him through to expo could be one of the first challenges of his governorship.

*Editor’s Note: The Commissioners of the NJSEA appoint the ED, with the sign off the Governor. The appointment does not require senate approval.
