At Request of Ciattarelli Operative, Trump Administration Illegally Releases Mikie Sherrill’s Unredacted Personal Military Records

Mikie Sherrill for Governor released the following statement after the Trump administration illegally released Mikie Sherrill’s unredacted Official Military Personnel File (OMPF) to Nicholas De Gregorio, an agent of the campaign working at the direction of Ciattarelli chief strategist Chris Russell. De Gregorio was on the short list to be Jack’s Lieutenant Governor and is a major donor to Jack’s campaign.

“The Trump administration blatantly violated federal law by releasing Mikie Sherrill’s unredacted personal military records to an agent of the Ciattarelli campaign — which were then distributed and weaponized by Jack Ciattarelli. This is a breathtaking, disturbing leak that must be thoroughly investigated. Once again, the Trump administration is targeting political opponents with an absolute disregard for the law, this time in concert with the Ciattarelli campaign. We are calling on Jack Ciattarelli and the Trump administration to immediately stop illegally distributing Mikie Sherrill’s military files, with protected personal information like her Social Security Number, and we will explore appropriate legal action. This disrespects the service of all military veterans, jeopardizes the safety of their records, and shows that Jack Ciattarelli will say or do anything to get elected, no matter the dishonor he brings upon himself — and that should frighten everyone,” said Mikie Sherrill for Governor Communications Director Sean Higgins.

Mikie Sherrill was issued this letter from the National Archives notifying her of the illegal disclosure of her OMPF.

Mikie Sherrill for Governor legal counsel sent the following demand letters to the National Archives linked here, the Ciattarelli campaign linked here, Ciattarelli campaign chief strategist Chris Russell linked here, and Nicholas De Gregorio linked here.

CBS News: Archives errs in releasing too much of Mikie Sherrill's military record to her opponent in governor's race

  • A branch of the National Archives released a mostly unredacted version of Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill's military records to Nicholas De Gregorio, an ally of Jack Ciattarelli, her GOP opponent in the New Jersey governor's race. The disclosure potentially violates the Privacy Act of 1974 and exemptions established under the Freedom of Information Act.
  • The documents included Sherrill's Social Security number, which appears on almost every page, home addresses for her and her parents, life insurance information, Sherrill's performance evaluations and the nondisclosure agreement between her and the U.S. government to safeguard classified information.
  • Contacted by CBS News, the NPRC told CBS News that a technician did not follow standard operating procedures for releasing records, and should only have released portions eligible under FOIA rules.
  • Sherrill had an unblemished career in the Navy and as a midshipman, received a Navy Achievement Medal in 1991 for saving the life of a fellow classmate.
  • On June 12, De Gregorio told CBS News he called NPRC's customer service line, which routed him to a "real, helpful person." CBS News has learned that the technician at NPRC accessed a system to retrieve Sherrill's Social Security number. And on June 30, her records were transmitted to De Gregorio, who said he gave the file to Ciattarelli's campaign[.]
  • "When I saw [Sherrill's] Social (Security number), I was shocked," said De Gregorio. "All of a sudden, the NPRC decides to give it to [me] a random guy. I made no bones like, I wasn't her, I wasn't a family member. There was no relationship there. And so I didn't know what to expect. So, I guess I'm a little shocked and kind of disgusted that the social was there."
