Gov. Phil Murphy, Speaker Craig Coughlin Discuss Compromise Ahead of Dark Money Disclosure Veto Override

Governor Phil Murphy is trying to get Speaker Craig Coughlin to accept a compromise on the dark money disclosure bill set for consideration by the Assembly. The compromise includes the elected official provision, but supposedly changes language to protect First Amendment issues that led to the conditional veto of the original version.

Governor Phil Murphy since Thursday has been trying to get Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-19) to accept a compromise on the dark money disclosure bill set for consideration on Monday by the Assembly.

The front office and speaker’s staffs have gone back and forth on a compromise that includes the elected official provision, but supposedly “cleans up” language to protect First Amendment issues the governor cited when he vetoed the original version.

A statehouse source described the situation at this time as conversational, nothing more.

“I wouldn’t make more of it than that,” the source said.
