AG’s Office Investigating Police-Involved Shooting in Hillsborough, N.J.
TRENTON — The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Thursday, September 25, 2025, in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey.
According to the preliminary investigation, Hillsborough police officers responded to a residence on Cornell Trail to conduct a welfare check, and entered the house at approximately 6:23 p.m. While inside, a man emerged from a second-floor bedroom holding a knife. He was shot as he advanced toward the officers. As of Friday, September 26, 2025, the man is in a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The knife was recovered at the scene.
After the shooting, the officers discovered two deceased individuals in separate bedrooms in the home. The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating their deaths.
The identities of the critically injured male, the decedents, and involved officers are not being released at this time.
A 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody. It requires that all such investigations be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
