New Mayor’s Unconventional Methods Reap Rewards
(Belleville NJ) Those who know newly minted Belleville Mayor Michael Melham often acknowledge his rather unique leadership style. Some may describe him as laser focused, relentless, micro-manger, while others may not be so kind.
“While many applaud the successes, we have had in my short tenure, some, understandably are uncomfortable with it. Everyone wants change, until it’s literally standing on their doorstep. I’m the type of Mayor that wants action, and immediate action,” Melham said.
Regarding the Council-Manager form of government that Belleville operates under, Melham stated, “I push the envelope because we have so much to accomplish. I have a great working relationship with our Township Manager, and while I may push, I am always respectfully of our individual duties and roles.”
In early September, Melham, along with other Township Officials, met with their DOT representatives to discuss an $8-10M Washington Avenue Roadway improvement. At that meeting, Melham was introduced to Meredith Hammond, the Township’s DOT liaison. At the conclusion of the meeting, she asked Melham if there was anything else she can assist with in Belleville. Melham immediately brought up the condition of several of Route 21’s on/off ramps. After four weeks of non action, Melham and a photographer took to the ramps with a sign reading, ‘Meredith Please Help Belleville NJ.’
After an email and a social media posting, DOT showed.
“Sometimes you need to think outside the box. I know the squeaky wheel gets the oil, and with my social media following and my ability to navigate through all layers of government, I have the ability to squeak quite loudly,” Melham concluded.
