Clean Water Action NJ Board Chair Janet Tauro Statement On Murphy Climate Change Resilience Strategy Executive Order

The Governor is spot on about dealing with sea level rise,” said Janet Tauro, Clean Water Action, NJ Board Chair. “Now we have to go beyond remediation and mitigation, and ultimately regulate the greenhouse gases that are causing sea level rise in the first place. And that’s where a strengthened energy master plan and moratorium on fossil fuel projects can go a long way toward meeting the scientific goal of a 45 percent reduction of greenhouse gases by 2030. We don’t have decades to do this. We have ten years tops.”
I would add that “planning has been near to non-existent. Development at the Shore has proceeded at a fast pace and too many open spaces, wetlands, and wooded areas have been paved over. What was destroyed was replaced with bigger, not necessarily better. Trees, yards, open spaces have been replaced by concrete, pavers, and elevated homes. What good is it to be 12 feet high if there’s no place to go because of flooded, dangerous roadways. We saw walls of water come at us, and I hope it never happens again, but if we do have another Sandy, we are in much worse shaped here at the Shore than in 2012.”
