Congressman Kim Passes Troop Pay Raise, Health Care for Seniors in First Year

WASHINGTON, DC – In his first year in office, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) led the way in working to pass an aggressive legislative agenda focused on the priorities of Burlington and Ocean Counties: pay raises for service members at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, cost savings for seniors struggling to afford prescription drugs, and cleaner water for New Jersey families.

“The bills I’ve introduced and worked to pass don’t begin from a place of partisanship, but from listening to our neighbors across New Jersey,” said Congressman Kim. “From my town halls to individual meetings with people across Burlington and Ocean Counties, I’ve heard real concerns and am proud to have worked with Democrats and Republicans to provide real solutions for our troops, seniors and working families.”

Over the course of his first year, Congressman Kim worked to pass provisions of bills he introduced into law that support military reservist small business owners, provide job training to military spouses, requires the military end the use of toxic chemicals that poison New Jersey drinking water, and strengthen enforcement of anti-robocall laws.

Of the bills Congressman Kim introduced, more than 60 percent were bipartisan, and 77 percent of the bills the Congressman co-sponsored had support from both parties.

Beyond his efforts to lead the passage of bills on health care, clean water and military pay, Congressman Kim also was a vocal advocate for H.R. 1, a bill that would strengthen ethics laws and clean up dark money in politics; H.R. 8, a bill that would establish common-sense gun safety measures; H.R. 5377, a bill that would provide tax relief for middle class families by restoring the SALT deduction; H.R. 1941, a bill that would protect New Jersey’s coast from offshore drilling; and the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020, which eliminates the Widow’s Tax and expands paid family leave for federal employees.

In addition to passing bills into law, Congressman Kim has focused on listening to people across Burlington and Ocean Counties. In his first year, he held 15 town halls, visited 42 townships, eight local health facilities, and participated in 26 meetings highlighting local veteran issues in New Jersey. 2019 also marked the launch of Congressman Kim’s Small Business Advisory Council.

Last month, Congressman Kim announced his office had helped Burlington and Ocean County residents with more than 1,500 issues with federal agencies such as Medicare, Social Security or the Department of Veterans Affairs.
