Congressman Kim Votes to Pass Trade Deal to Grow Jobs, Protect American Workers
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) voted to allow the implementation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which improves elements of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that will help grow jobs and strengthen worker and environmental protections.
“American businesses can out-innovate and the American people can outwork anyone in the world when the rules are fair,” said Congressman Kim. “The USMCA is a win-win for people throughout Burlington and Ocean Counties. Our farmers and manufacturers will have better access to key markets and our neighbors won’t have to engage in a race to the bottom with Mexico, whose unacceptable wages and standards hurt American workers. This is an example of what this Congress can do when we come together for the people we serve. I’ll continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to create economic opportunities and protect the rights of New Jersey workers.”
The USMCA, negotiated by representatives from the United States, Mexico, and Canada, includes key improvements in enforcement of worker and environmental protections. The agreement would also help lower the cost of prescription drugs by increasing competition and access to generic drugs.
The USMCA is endorsed by a variety of business, workers’ rights and agricultural organizations such as the AFL-CIO, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, and the American Farm Bureau Federation.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka called the agreement a, “vast improvement over both the original NAFTA and the agreement negotiated by President Trump last year.” He also stated that, “trade rules in America will now be fairer” with the implementation of the USMCA.
According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, New Jersey exported $10 billion in goods to Canada and Mexico in 2018.
“Agriculture’s economic viability depends on vibrant export markets,” said NJ Farm Bureau president, Ryck Suydam. “USMCA is long overdue, and Farm Bureau applauds the support for it by Rep. Andy Kim and the entire New Jersey delegation.”
Congressman Kim is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Small Business. More information about Congressman Kim can be found on his website by clicking here.
