Corrado Resolution Designating January as NUT Carcinoma Awareness Month Clears Senate

Senator Kristin Corrado’s legislation to raise awareness of NUT carcinoma, an aggressive cancer usually diagnosed in young victims, unanimously passed the New Jersey Senate.

The resolution is dedicated in memory of Benjamin Landel, a Ramapo High School soccer and track star who succumbed after a nine-month battle with this cancer.

“Benjamin was a courageous young man from my district, and the way he lived before and after his diagnosis was an inspiration to many,” said Corrado (R-40). “Even as he fought this rare, aggressive cancer, he inspired other patients with his selflessness and outgoing personality. Through this legislation, his spirit will continue to support young people dealing with pediatric cancer and their families.”

Corrado’s bill, SJR-70, designates every January as NUT Carcinoma Awareness Month.

NUT carcinoma is a rare genetic cancer predominantly found in boys. It can form anywhere in the body, but often affects the head, neck, and thoracic cavity. The average survival rate is six to nine months.

“Enacting this legislation will broaden awareness of this type of cancer and the new treatments that are improving survival rates,” Corrado said. “Better outcomes are more likely when NUT carcinoma is diagnosed early.”
