Mayor Fulop Enhances Traffic Calming Measures with Construction of Speed Humps in More Than 80 Locations throughout Community
Speed humps to serve as an additional countermeasure for safer streets as Jersey City looks to end traffic fatalities by 2026 through its Vision Zero initiative
JERSEY CITY –Mayor Fulop and the City of Jersey City will install speed humps in more than 80 locations across the community in 2019, helping to advance the City toward its Vision Zero initiative. Speed humps are an essential part of designing safer streets, as higher speeds increase the risk of a motor vehicle crash and ultimately increase the risk of serious injury or death. “We reached out to members of the community for recommendations on where the speed humps are most needed,” said Mayor Steven M. Fulop. “We will now target those specific roadways to install the speed humps and help reduce vehicle speed. We have been committed to taking action to further enhance roadway safety, and with the Vision Zero Action Plan underway, we are committed to making a continued effort of making Jersey City’s streets safe for all modes of travel.”
The effects of speed are most pronounced for pedestrians, whose risk of dying if struck by a vehicle increases with vehicle speed. In addition to saving lives and preventing tragedies, traffic-calming measures also have the significant additional benefit of creating a more commuter-friendly city in which walking, riding a bike, taking the bus or train, and driving a car are safer and more enjoyable.
Speed humps previously removed due to resurfacing projects will also be reconstructed throughout the City.
Additional safety measures have been rolled out in Jersey City as part of the Vision Zero initiative. The first municipality in New Jersey to adopt the initiative, Jersey City aims to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2026 through Vision Zero.
“We will continue to embed traffic safety measures in all design and operational decisions of routine and capital reconstruction projects,” said Mayor Fulop. “Traffic fatalities are avoidable, and together we can work to ensure no life is senselessly lost.”
