Mayor Yaede Calls on State Officials, Again, to Address New Revelation of Consistently Low Chlorine Levels at Trenton Water Work’s Mercerville Tower

Frustrated by the slow response of State officials to recent revelations of low chlorine levels at Trenton Water Works’ Mercerville tower, Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede has again written Governor Murphy, State Department heads and Trenton Water Works to demand immediate action.

Recently, a State official revealed “historically low” chlorine levels at Trenton Water Work’s Mercerville tower. During the past two decades, cases of Legionnaire’s Disease in the area serviced by this tower have occurred.  A decade old NJ Department of Health report indicated a potential cause for the Legionnaire’s cases: low chlorine levels at the Mercerville tower.

Now, new data verify that between April and early September of this year, chlorine levels at the Trenton Water Works’ Mercerville tower were consistently below acceptable standards during the entire timeframe, with bacteria growth escalating during September.

Mayor Yaede has demanded daily, on-site chlorine monitoring at the Trenton Water Works’ Mercerville Tower, as well as a hard deadline for a permanent remedy for the chlorine-related issue.

“Hamiltonians served by Trenton Water Works need to know what Governor Murphy and his administration are going to do to immediately address these disturbing, recently revealed facts; and yet, there seems to be a startling lack of urgency by the State officials who regulate Trenton Water Works and who have known about this alarming information,” says Mayor Kelly Yaede.
