Michael Roth Condemns Shutdown Deal and Backdoor Bargains
Mountainside, NJ — Today, Michael Roth, candidate for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, issued his condemnation of the shutdown deal, forced through late on a Sunday night before the work week begins for millions of New Jerseyans.
“This shutdown deal is why people have lost faith in our federal government, because it’s not a deal — it’s a total surrender,” said Roth. “When negotiations are made in bad faith, regular people end up getting hurt every single time. Millions of New Jerseyans are already seeing their healthcare premiums skyrocket because Republicans are more concerned about their own profit, and now this deal will make New Jersey even more expensive and harder to live in. This is yet another boulder in the backpack that working people are forced to shoulder.”
He continued, “Last Tuesday’s election proved that when government shows up for working people, working people show up for government. But this is a two-way street — a relationship. And Democrats simply cannot expect to keep asking folks to show up for them without showing any fight or leadership in return.
“We must fight tooth and nail to ensure working families, small businesses, seniors, students, and everyone in between can actually afford to live in our great state. Instead, tonight we showed once again that political games come before results. It’s a damn shonda — a shame. And it must change.”
All Eyes on Affordability
Cost of living and affordability were two key issues that dominated the last election cycle, with Democrats securing big wins running on platforms that named actionable solutions. In his race to unseat Tom Kean Jr. — the New Jersey Representative who brings home the least amount of federal funding from taxpayer dollars to improve the lives of his constituents — Michael Roth is well-poised to take his experience in making government work for working people as the former leader of the Small Business Administration to Congress and deliver for New Jerseyans on day one.
