NJ-10 Candidate John Flora Endorses Gerald Lyons for School Board

John Flora, candidate in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, endorses Trustee
Gerald Lyons for a Three-Year Term in the wake of homophobic comments made by a Super PAC named Fairer N.J.

JERSEY CITY, NJ – 11/3/2019

Two days before Election Day, Campaign Manager of the Education Matters slate
in the Jersey City school board race shared a disturbing Facebook post. Gerald Lyons
was the target of the post, lampooned over his sexual orientation, weight, and age.
Fairer N.J., a newly-formed super PAC which recently stated to the Election Law
Enforcement Commission that its purpose was to “promote good policy-making in New
Jersey at the state and local levels”, was responsible for the post.

Sixteen-year educator in Jersey City and congressional candidate John Flora had
the following questions to publicly ask of Fairer N.J. after seeing a photo of Lyons with :

 Does Fairer N.J. think it is fair to personally insult a sitting member of the school
board because of his sexual orientation?
 Is Fairer N.J. aware that Governor Murphy signed an LGBTQ-inclusive curriculum
bill into law this past February?
 Has Fairer N.J. accepted that the Supreme Court recently held that the 14 th
Amendment require all states to grant same-sex marriages?
 Will Fairer N.J. chairman Jeremy Farrell step down or immediately rebuke the
statements that his organization made on social media.

John added that “there is no candidate more deserving of this seat than Gerald
Lyons. His experience in education is unmatched, having served as a vocational and
academic teacher, media specialist, supervisor of instruction, principal, adjunct
professor, and school board trustee. We should all be so grateful that someone with a
background as deep and diverse as Gerald would voluntarily donate three more years of
unpaid service to our school district. I proudly endorse Trustee Lyons for a three-year
term.”
