North Brunswick Train Station Achieves Key Design Milestone
Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) unveils new web destination to inform the public
MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ – The Middlesex County Improvement Authority (MCIA) has achieved a significant design milestone with formal approval by NJ TRANSIT of 10% of the concept design. With this announcement of progress, the MCIA is unveiling a North Brunswick Train Station project webpage to inform community stakeholders of the progress and activities around its development. The URL is www.middlesexcountynj.gov/northbrunswicktrain.
“This milestone is significant because all partners in this project have agreed to baseline design and criteria. The approval allows us to immediately proceed with the next phase of design, which is more technical and detailed,” said Executive Director H. James Polos.
“The MCIA has transformed into an agency focused on economic development for Middlesex County. They are spearheading the North Brunswick Train station project, which is part of our Destination 2040 strategic vision,” said County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios. “Our residents will receive the benefits of a strategic plan to make Middlesex County a thriving, attractive destination to live, work, and play for generations to come. Additionally, we will see the benefit of reducing traffic along the Route 1 corridor.”
“The design team which meets regularly, with representatives from all agencies involved has helped to streamline what would otherwise be a very cumbersome and lengthy process. Collaboration as the design process progresses, will be a major benefit to moving this project forward in an expedited manner,” said Chairman of the MCIA James Nolan.
North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack welcomed the news of an informational webpage and its ability to allow residents to remain engaged on project progress. “Our residents have been anxiously awaiting the new train station. As the project progresses, it’s important to be as transparent as possible and keep the public engaged and informed. The dedicated webpage will be a great tool to provide regular updates.”
“This exciting milestone is the first step of many to bring a necessary train stop to the County. This project will bring economic benefits to the region as a whole, attracting business, creating jobs and producing new property tax ratables,” said County Commissioner Deputy Director and NJ TRANSIT Board Member Shanti Narra. “With MCIA leading the way, we are seeing marked progress in a short amount of time, on this much-awaited train station.”
“We are pleased to continue coordinating with our partners at Middlesex County to advance the North Brunswick station project,” said NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett. “This project will add a new station stop in the heart of the Northeast Corridor, our busiest rail line, providing additional access to mass transit, taking cars off the congested highways and reducing emissions while driving economic activity in Middlesex County.”
The long-awaited North Brunswick Train Station Project began to move forward in late 2020, when the MCIA signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with NJ TRANSIT. The MOU permits the MCIA to serve as the project manager overseeing the design and construction of the project. Under this agreement, the MCIA coordinates input from NJ TRANSIT, AMTRAK, New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), the township of North Brunswick and its developer and Middlesex County.
With the announcement of NJ TRANSIT’s approval, the County also shared a new concept rendering of the North Brunswick Train Station, along with a dedicated project webpage. The webpage on the County’s website is to ensure community stakeholders are kept up-to-date and informed of project milestones as they are reached.
Funding for the project has been provided by the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund (NJTTF) in the amount of $50 million. This phase of work will include the construction of the Southbound platform, along with a provision to extend an existing pedestrian overpass to serve a potential future Northbound/Eastbound side.
In October 2021, with the funding and necessary agreements in place, design and preliminary engineering work began. The conceptual design direction was quickly submitted in January of 2022 and the design team worked to finalize technical aspects through the summer, culminating with NJ TRANSIT’s 10% design approval announced today.
