Warren, NJ – Governor Mikie Sherrill signed a proclamation on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, declaring September 14-20, 2026, as National Diaper Need Awareness Week and recognizing the work of Moms Helping Moms (MHM) in supporting families across New Jersey who cannot afford diapers.

"The people of New Jersey recognize that diaper need is a public health issue, and addressing diaper need can lead to economic opportunity for the state's families and communities and improved health for children, thus ensuring all children and families have access to the basic necessities required to thrive and reach their full potential," the proclamation reads.

A National Diaper Bank Network survey of U.S. families found that nearly one in two families struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry, and healthy. Diaper need affects approximately three million babies living in poverty across the United States.

At the same time, many of the systems families rely on during difficult periods are facing unprecedented challenges. Programs that support children's health, nutrition, early education, and family stability are being reduced, restructured, or weakened. As resources become scarcer, basic necessities like diapers are often among the first items families are forced to go without.

In New Jersey, Moms Helping Moms witnesses this reality every day. No parent should have to choose between purchasing diapers and buying groceries. Yet, for thousands of families across the state, that is exactly the decision they face each month.

Last year, Moms Helping Moms distributed nearly three million essential items to families throughout New Jersey. Every diaper, package of wipes, and item of clothing represented one less worry for a parent and one more opportunity for a child to thrive. However, the need continues to grow.

"National Diaper Need Awareness Week shines a light on a challenge that too many families face in silence," said Judi Meighan, Interim Executive Director. "This proclamation recognizes not only the importance of access to diapers, but also the dignity, health, and well-being of every child in New Jersey."
