Senator Kim Calls on Senate to Reassert Control over AI

Today, Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) released the following statement:

“AI is moving faster than anyone - including its creators - can understand or control.  We need to act and act now to ensure that humans remain in control of this technology and that all people - not just the elite few - benefit from it.

“The warnings we’ve gotten after multiple concerning AI incidents need to serve as a wake-up call to establish a comprehensive approach including government action to put guardrails on our own technology, and ensure that our competitors and adversaries aren't able to develop dangerous technologies.

“Technology and innovation must move forward; it’s what has powered our nation’s economy and kept us safe. But moving forward recklessly without sensible controls is a recipe for chaos and danger. The American people don’t want this technology to advance without rules that they have a say in writing.

“The Senate will reconvene this week. We should call together a Senate wide discussion on next steps and set out to pass critical bipartisan legislation that we can get done before the end of the year like the MATCH Act and BLADE Act that I’ve put forward along with other legislation to protect our kids. I’ve also pushed to develop a protocol to “Mythos-proof” our critical infrastructure and financial/healthcare sectors from AI-driven attacks and vulnerabilities. These are steps we can take right now as we build out broader solutions and regulations.

“It should be a focus of ours to discuss how to reassert control over AI for the American people. Control based on a set of principles, enforced by a set of rules, all built for a common purpose: to ensure the technology and innovation that moves us forward never leaves us behind.  And controls to ensure our competitors and adversaries aren't able to proceed recklessly while we take sensible steps.”
