Pou to be President-elect of NHCSL

Trenton – State Senate Commerce Committee Chairwoman Nellie Pou announced today that she was elected President Elect of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL). After the current president serves out their term, in 2022, Senator Pou will become the organization’s president and serve a two-year term.

The election took place last week at the NHCSL’s annual meeting, which took place this year in Puerto Rico.

“I am humbled and honored by this election,” said Senator Pou (D-Passaic/Bergen). “As a legislator representing a richly diverse district, I am proud to have the opportunity to bring my experiences in North Jersey to a larger forum. Everyone – citizens, documented immigrants and undocumented ones – deserve fundamental human rights and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish  in the decisive years to come.”

The NHCSL was founded in 1989 as a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)3. The organization includes 425 members and spans 42 states as well as Puerto Rico. Its mission is to be the foremost organization serving and representing the interests of Hispanic state legislators from all states, commonwealths and territories of the United States and the Western Hemisphere.  The NHCSL meets its mission by serving as a catalyst for joint action on issues of common concern, such as housing, immigration, education and healthcare to all segments of the Hispanic community.

Additionally, the NHCSL provides a forum for information exchange and member networking, supports leadership training, acts as a liaison with sister U.S. Hispanic organizations. It promotes public and private partnerships with business and labor, and partners with Hispanic state or provincial legislators and their associations represented throughout the world.
