Fairfield, NJ — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill toured six Superfund sites in the 11th District of New Jersey. Congresswoman Sherrill was joined on the tour by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Peter D. Lopez, NJDEP Commissioner Catherine McCabe, and well as other local officials from Chatham Township, Rockaway Township, Rockaway Borough, and Fairfield.
Established in 1980, the Superfund program allows the EPA to clean up some of the most heavily polluted and contaminated sites across the country. New Jersey has more Superfund sites than any other state in the nation, and the sites represent significant health hazards and challenges for our local communities. Representative Sherrill requested increased funding in March for the Superfund program from the House Appropriations Committee, and in June voted for a $55 million increase over current funding levels for the program.
“Superfund clean-up is essential for the health and well-being of our communities in North Jersey,” said Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. “This tour brought together federal, state, and local officials so we can better coordinate on the particular issues at each site and understand the environmental and health impact on our communities. I appreciate EPA Regional Administrator Lopez and DEP Commissioner McCabe joining me in visiting these important sites. I have worked to increase funding for the Superfund program this year and will continue to advocate for the remediation of our ten Superfund sites across the district.”

Cleaning up and revitalizing toxic land sites is of the utmost importance to the communities across the country that are affected by these sites, especially in New Jersey where we have the most Superfund sites of any state.”
“By partnering with the EPA, local governments and communities, we are working to address the contamination at these sites and ensure that nearby residents have access to clean drinking water and a healthy environment,” DEP Commissioner Catherine R. McCabe said. “We look forward to continuing our work with the EPA to investigate and remediate these sites to protect public health.”

Rockaway Township Wells, Rockaway Township
Rockaway Borough Well Field, Rockaway Borough
Unimatic Manufacturing Corp., Fairfield
Caldwell Trucking Co., Fairfield
This is the second Superfund site visit for Congresswoman Sherrill since she took her seat in January. In February 2019, Congresswoman Sherrill toured the Mansfield Trail Dump in Byram, Sussex County.
