Senate Legislative Oversight Committee Will Meet to Discuss the Future of Artificial Intelligence in New Jersey

TRENTON – The Senate Legislative Oversight Committee will hold a hearing on Monday to hear testimony from invited guests to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) is defined and the AI landscape in New Jersey.

“New Jersey stands at the threshold of an unprecedented opportunity to harness the growing power of AI to drive economic growth, improve public services, and enhance the quality of life for its citizens,” said Senate Legislative Oversight Committee Chairman Andrew Zwicker (D-Middlesex/Mercer/Somerset/Hunterdon). “Alongside this opportunity comes ethical challenges that must be carefully navigated. This meeting will allow us to hear from industry leaders and experts who can offer us guidance on how New Jersey can be a responsible steward of AI innovation.”

AI is transforming how we live and work, impacting industries like healthcare, education, transportation, manufacturing, and beyond. The World Economic Forum reports that by 2025, 97 million new roles are projected to emerge from the use of artificial intelligence.

New Jersey is well on its way to becoming a national leader in artificial intelligence. In July, Governor Murphy signed S-3432 into law, establishing the Next New Jersey Program to provide tax credits to innovative AI companies. The NJ AI Hub, a partnership between the state and Princeton University, is already bringing together leaders, researchers, and companies to advance AI development. The Artificial Intelligence Task Force, spearheaded by New Jersey’s Chief AI Strategist, Dr. Beth Noveck, is currently working to provide recommendations on steps New Jersey can take to encourage the equitable expansion of AI technologies.

To build on these initiatives and explore new opportunities, the committee will hear testimony on the subject from representatives of stakeholder organizations, including but not limited to:

  • NJ AI Hub
  • NJ Business & Industry Association
  • The Commission on Science, Innovation, and Technology
  • NJ Economic Development Authority
  • NJ President’s Council
  • NJ Council of County Colleges
  • NJ’s Chief Technology Officer, Chris Rein
  • HealthCare Institute of New Jersey
  • Dell
  • Technet

The Senate Legislative Oversight Committee will meet on Monday, October 21, at 1:00 PM in Committee Room 4, State House Annex, Trenton.

The hearing will also be available virtually via the OLS website.
