SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND BENJAMIN MOORE JOIN FORCES FOR STROKE SURVIVORS IN BERGEN COUNTY
Maywood, N.J. – The Adler Aphasia Center, a non-profit organization that offers innovative post-rehabilitative therapeutic programming addressing the long-term needs of people with aphasia and their families, will benefit from the generosity of the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and Benjamin Moore who will provide a holiday makeover of the Center’s flagship location in Maywood, NJ.
“The Adler Aphasia Center in Maywood serves 85 people with aphasia and 100 volunteers in a large space that will benefit greatly from a fresh coat of paint,” says Chantelle Walker, President and CEO. “We continue to be inspired by the generosity of our community, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and our corporate partner, Benjamin Moore. The Sheriff’s Office has graciously offered to provide the labor to paint the Center – a project which will take the better part of a week to complete.”
Aphasia is a language disorder that results from damage to the brain, most frequently caused by stroke. Nearly 40% of all stroke survivors have aphasia – an estimated 70,000 people in New Jersey alone, according to a report by the NJ State Aphasia Study Commission. Of these, the report found over 90% are depressed, feeling frustrated and socially isolated by their inability to communicate effectively with others. Yet, just 2% participate in long-term rehabilitation programs, despite the fact that aphasia has been shown to improve incrementally over time with the appropriate therapeutic supports.
“The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office is always proud to lend a hand, especially to organizations committed to serving others. When the BCSO Community Release Center was contacted by about this project, it was a ‘no-brainer’ given the outstanding work done each and every day by the Adler Aphasia Center. The Sheriff’s Office was glad to partner on this project and it is my hope to continue growing meaningful opportunities for the benefit of both the inmates in our work release program and the greater-Bergen County community,” says Sheriff Anthony Cureton.
