Steinhardt: Democrat Gun Laws Hit Iceberg in Federal Court
Senator Doug Steinhardt responded after a pair of new gun laws enacted by Governor Phil Murphy and Trenton Democrats were stopped cold in federal courtrooms this week.
“The overreaching gun laws passed by Trenton Democrats have hit an iceberg in federal court and are going down faster than the Titanic,” said Steinhardt (R-23). “That’s what happens when you move full steam ahead to pass clearly unconstitutional laws as Republicans repeatedly warned would happen.”
A federal judge Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction to block N.J.S.A. 2C:58-35, a law signed by Governor Murphy last July that allows the Attorney General of New Jersey to file lawsuits against members of the firearms industry.
The ruling came just a day after a different federal judge blocked the enforcement of several sections of another law signed by the governor in December that established severe restrictions on the concealed carry of firearms in New Jersey.
Other major sections of that law, which Republicans warned was an unconstitutional attempt by Democrats to circumvent the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Bruen, had been blocked in a prior ruling in early January.
Steinhardt voted against the concealed carry bill in one of his votes just minutes after being sworn-in as a senator.
“I will never vote to make criminals out of lawful gun owners,” added Steinhardt. “Gun crime and crime guns are the real threat to society and the Second Amendment. Lawful gun owners will always have my support.”
