Bennett Closes Strong in CD-7 with Sherrill, Kim, and Booker

SPRINGFIELD - Democrats are feeling giddy.

The polls look good, the early vote looks very good and then, there's the "vibe."

Just like 2018 - a year in which Dems took control of the House and won all but one of New Jersey's 12 congressional seats.

No, better than 2018.

So said Andy Kim.

Kim, Cory Booker and Mikie Sherrill all converged Monday evening in this Union County town for an upbeat election eve rally for CD-7 candidate Rebecca Bennett.

The governor, speaking to reporters before the event, said she expected Republicans to take a "shellacking" on Tuesday all across the nation.

The press "gaggle" complete, everyone moved into the gymnasium of the Chisholm Community Center where about 150 supporters awaited.

Sherrill spoke first, telling the crowd that "all eyes are on New Jersey."

It is true that CD-7 is one of the more competitive races in the nation.

Kim, who originally won his CD-3 seat in 2018, before ascending to the Senate in 2024, detailed some of the "sins" of the Trump administration - corruption, an unpopular war and a poor economy.

"Tomorrow, we say 'enough,'" he said.

Booker, as is his custom, was the most philosophical - and on this night, historical.

He quoted Thomas Paine's famous line about the "summer soldier and the sunshine patriot," but said, no, that is not New Jersey.

After all, it was New Jersey, Booker asserted,  that propelled Washington's army to victory more than 250 years ago. If New Jersey could do that, Democrats winning CD-7 should be a cinch.

Bennett followed Booker, which is hard to do, but she is the candidate.

For the first time this campaign season, she displayed the flag uniform patch she wore in the Navy. The point was simple - she loves the country and wants to serve it.

Then, she moved on to one of her usual campaign comments. She said of Tom Kean Jr.:

"He is complicit. He is a coward. And tomorrow, we're going to fire him."

What about Rep. Kean?

He does not hold public events. His Facebook page shows that he was just interviewed on the Scott Jennings radio show and that he rallied supporters over the weekend in Hunterdon County and Mount Olive.

And he reportedly will hold an election night event between 8 and 10 p.m.

Between 8 and 10 p.m.? He must be expecting an early night.
