Varela, the son of Colombian immigrants and a small business owner, is running to unseat Republican Tom Kean Jr. in one of the most competitive House races in the country. He has been a vocal opponent of ICE enforcement in New Jersey communities, including the proposed ICE jail in Roxbury, which falls within NJ-7.
"Brian Varela is the son of immigrants, so he knows what's at stake for our communities right now,” said Nedia Morsy, Director, Make the Road Action New Jersey. “Brian is ready to stand up to Trump's deportation agenda and stand with workers demanding dignity on the job. We're ready to put our full organizing power behind him in this primary."
"My parents came here from Colombia searching for a better life, and because they found one, I had opportunities that wouldn't have existed otherwise. Every hardworking family in this district deserves that same opportunity, and it starts with having a government that’s on your side,” said Brian Varela. “Under this administration, prices are out of control, workers are getting cheated and families are afraid federal agents will grab them off the street. I'm running for Congress to make life better and affordable for all of our communities, and I'm proud to have Make the Road Action New Jersey stand with me in that fight."
The primary election is on June 2, 2026.
