NJ Working Families Party Celebrates Election Night Victories in New Jersey and Across Country: “Time to Defend Democracy, Build Working Class Power”
TRENTON, NJ — The New Jersey Working Families Party celebrated tonight’s historic blue wave, with WFP-endorsed candidates winning big in New Jersey and across the country as Democrats take back control of Congress.
In New Jersey, WFP-endorsed candidates Analilia Mejia (NJ-11), Adam Hamawy (NJ-12), and LaMonica McIver (NJ-10) won their races. They will join WFP champions elected across the country, including Chris Rabb (PA-3), Brad Lander (NY-10), Claire Valdez (NY-7), and Darializa Avila Chevalier (NY-13).
WFP also invested in the campaigns to unseat Rep. Tom Kean, Jr. (NJ-7), where Rebecca Bennett beat the two-term incumbent, and to unseat Rep. Jeff Van Drew (NJ-2), where Cape May Mayor Zack Mullock defeated the four-term incumbent.
In response to tonight’s election results, New Jersey Working Families Party Director Antoinette Miles released the following statement:
“Tonight, working people in New Jersey and across the country voted for a government that’s actually going to work for them. Billionaires like Elon Musk spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to stop us, but they don’t understand that organized people are more powerful than organized money.
“Voters are furious right now and they have every reason to be. Republicans in Washington are running the country for their billionaire donors while the rest of us are stuck paying for it. Families are feeling it at the grocery store and the gas pump, and again every month when the rent goes up and their insurance premium is due.
“The American people are putting their trust in the next Congress to defend democracy and build working class power. Democrats have a real mandate to deliver, and they shouldn’t waste any time before they get to work. That means putting a check on the Trump administration’s corruption with oversight hearings, investigations, and real consequences for officials caught breaking the law. It means passing legislation that puts money back in people’s pockets, whether that’s raising wages, guaranteeing healthcare for all, or lowering the cost of childcare.
“Donald Trump is already threatening to veto that agenda, and Democrats should let him. Send him popular legislation and make him explain to the American people why he keeps saying no.
“This election should serve as a warning to Trump, Big Tech, AIPAC, and their corporate allies that their time is up.”
In addition to its congressional wins, the NJWFP-endorsed candidates also won local races across the state tonight, including:
- Ron Bautista, Hudson County Commissioner, District 5
- Alex Valdez, Hudson County Commissioner, District 9
- Bill O’Dea, Hudson County Commissioner, District 2
- Pam Johnson, Hudson County Commissioner, District 3
- Shantell Cherry, Piscataway Township Council, District 1
