Rebecca Bennett Crushes Kean

BRIDGEWATER - Bennett versus Kean. It was supposed to be the marquee matchup of the 2026 general election season, a politics junkie's dream between two heavyweights in a New Jersey battleground district.
It ended up being a bore snore, as Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett tonight ran over incumbent Republican Congressman Tom Kean, Jr.
Bennett's win signified a critical pick up for Democrats seeking a congressional majority in Washington.
Bennett: 140,552 (60.8%)
Kean: 87,575 (37.9%)
Democrat Bennett defeated Kean in a district that insiders from both parties of New Jersey's establishment essentially drew for the scion of the Kean political family. That put a punctuation mark on the win, while completing a hat trick on those respectable, polite Republican family descendants who failed to survive Trump's scorched earth MAGA era: Rodney Frelinghuysen, Leonard Lance, and now Kean.
A retired Navy helicopter pilot, Bennett seemed down the stretch, when it became clear that Kean couldn't escape the perfect storm of Trump and his own vanishing act - to be more in good natured competition with fellow hotshot pilot - and fellow Democrat - Mikie Sherrill than the incumbent Republican.
She and her fellow Democrats repeatedly hit her opponent hard in the closely watched race. The DCCC came out of the primary gate with the following remark:
“Self-serving career politician Tom Kean Jr. has completely betrayed New Jersey by putting himself, Donald Trump, and his D.C. party bosses ahead of his own community," said DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene. "Kean Jr. promised one thing on the campaign trail to get elected, but has instead come to embody the very same Washington corruption that he once swore he’d fight against. New Jersey deserves a servant leader like former Navy helicopter pilot and mom Rebecca Bennett, who knows what it means to put the mission first. Rebecca will fight to root out corruption in Washington, expand access to health care, and lower costs for families just like hers. New Jersey voters are ready to fire Kean Jr. and elect Rebecca because they know she will fight for them and their families."
For its part, the Kean campaign cynically blended a press-free, issues-unencumbered cotton candy Facebook tour by the seemingly detached candidate, with a vicious string of dark money ads targeting Bennett's professional history in the pharmaceutical industry.
It failed, as Bennett steamrolled the Republican in once leafy farm country that now serves as home to Trump's garish Bedminster golf course, Mayflower hard tack turned simply tacky.
The releases began pouring in following Bennet's win:
In response to Rebecca Bennett’s election to the U.S. House of Representatives, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Rebecca Bennett, the New Jersey Democratic Party, and all of the organizers who worked around the clock to flip this seat from red to blue. As a former Navy helicopter pilot, officer in the Air National Guard, and healthcare leader, Rebecca has served her community and our country. In the House, she will show up for New Jerseyans day in and day out to lower costs, protect healthcare, make housing more affordable, and create good-paying jobs.”
Defend The Vote Congratulates Rebecca Bennett on House Victory
Defend The Vote Executive Director Brian Lemek congratulated Rebecca Bennett on her victory in the NJ-07 House race:
“Rebecca understands that our democracy works best when government is accountable to the people it serves, not wealthy special interests and powerful insiders. Congratulations to Representative-elect Bennett. She’ll be a strong voice for protecting the freedom to vote, taking on corruption, and ensuring ordinary people have a say in the decisions that affect their lives. We’re proud to have supported her and look forward to working with her.”
VICTORY: Gun safety champion Rebecca Bennett elected to the U.S. House in NJ-07
WASHINGTON — GIFFORDS PAC, the national gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, congratulated Rebecca Bennett on her election to represent New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. GIFFORDS PAC invested nearly $400,000 in NJ-07 as part of its $10 million commitment to electing and supporting gun safety champions in 2026.
“Congratulations to Rebecca Bennett on her hard-fought victory. I am thrilled that voters across NJ-07 made their voices heard and are sending a gun safety champion to Washington,” said former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. “I spent time with Congresswoman-elect Bennett on the campaign trail and saw firsthand that she has the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and will work tirelessly to keep guns out of the wrong hands. GIFFORDS PAC was proud to support her in this critically important campaign and we look forward to working with her in Congress to enact commonsense gun safety reforms that will save lives.”
GIFFORDS PAC endorsed of Bennett’s bid to flip NJ-07 and ran a $400,000 ad campaign holding Rep. Tom Kean accountable for putting the gun lobby over the safety of New Jersey communities. Former Congresswoman Giffords appeared with Bennett on the campaign trail in October, lifting up gun safety as a major crime prevention and public safety issue for voters.
