Trenton Native Featured in New National Book Celebrating Grandfamilies
Community leader shares inspiring story of perseverance, education, and the power of a grandmother's love
TRENTON, N.J. — Trenton native Shaheed Muhammad Morris, a respected housing professional, community leader, and advocate for families, is featured in the newly released book, "Grandfamilies: The Stories of Children and the Loving Relatives Who Raise Them," authored by Donna Butts.
The book highlights the lives of individuals raised by grandparents and other relatives, showcasing stories of resilience, sacrifice, and unconditional love.
Morris' chapter recounts his journey from growing up in public housing under the care of his beloved grandmother to becoming an accomplished government leader, writer, and advocate dedicated to creating opportunities for others.
Raised in one of Trenton's public housing communities, Morris credits his grandmother's unwavering support, discipline, and belief in education for changing the trajectory of his life. Her commitment to his future inspired him to pursue higher education and a career centered on service.
Morris has worked for the state of New Jersey for the last eight years.
"As someone raised by my grandmother, I am honored to share my story in a book that recognizes the extraordinary role grandparents and relative caregivers play in shaping lives," Morris said. "This book is a tribute to the countless families who step forward with love and sacrifice to provide stability and hope for the next generation."
A first-generation college graduate, Morris earned his bachelor's degree from South Dakota State University, studied Real Estate Finance at Iowa State University, and also holds an associate degree in Applied Science from Mercer County Community College.
His inclusion in the book reflects not only his personal journey but also the experiences of millions of children across America who are raised by grandparents and other relatives. Morris hopes his story will inspire young people facing adversity to believe that their circumstances do not define their future.
"Grandfamilies: The Stories of Children and the Loving Relatives Who Raise Them" celebrates the resilience of intergenerational families and highlights the profound impact that loving caregivers have on the lives of children. Through deeply personal stories, the book illustrates how compassion, stability, and mentorship can transform lives and strengthen communities.
Morris expressed gratitude to author Donna Butts for preserving these important stories and for shining a national spotlight on grandfamilies whose sacrifices often go unnoticed.
"Every child deserves someone who believes in them," Morris said. "My grandmother believed in me before I believed in myself, and this book is a testament to her legacy and the countless grandparents who quietly change the world one child at a time."
The book is now available for purchase through major booksellers and online retailers.
