Senators Prepare to Interview Davenport, Binder

All eyes will be on the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday as the Legislature interviews Jennifer Davenport, Governor Mikie Sherrill's nominee to be Attorney General.

The interview is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

Senator Brian P. Stack (D-33) chairs the committee. Senator Troy Singleton (D-7)

Stack

serves as vice chair.

The committee will also interview Aaron Binder, Governor Sherrill's nominee to serve as Treasurer.

Governor Sherrill announced Davenport as her choice on Dec. 15th of last year.

A life-long public servant, the nominee for AG has dedicated her career to upholding the law, according to Sherrill. With over 15 years of law enforcement experience at the state and federal level, Davenport earned the respect of both fellow law enforcement professionals and the communities she's worked to serve.

“A strong Attorney General is critical to delivering for New Jerseyans, whether that taking on price gougers, fighting for federal resources, or protecting our rights and freedoms. That’s why I’m excited to announce Jennifer Davenport as my Attorney General nominee. Working with Jen at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, I saw her ironclad commitment to upholding the law and the Constitution. Equally as powerful is her dedication to public service, working hand-in-hand with the communities she served to ensure our residents felt safe and supported. Jen’s ability to work with anyone and everyone to deliver for our residents and her decade and a half of experience with complex civil and criminal cases will be essential as we work to build a more affordable Garden State. As a lifelong New Jerseyan, I know Jen will never back down from a fight,” said Sherrill.

“I am so grateful to Governor-elect Sherrill for nominating me to serve as Attorney General. The Attorney General’s Office plays a critical role in advancing the Governor-elect’s mission of keeping residents safe and making the state affordable, and I share her commitment to that mission. I have spent my career in public service and alongside law enforcement, and in each role, I have worked to bring people together and solve the toughest problems facing our state. So, from taking on gun violence and human trafficking, to protecting our children, to ensuring affordability, to defending New Jerseyans from attacks out of Washington, I will build on my career in law enforcement and in public service to protect New Jerseyans every day,” said Davenport.

Binder

Binder is currently serving as the state’s Deputy Treasurer and has previous experience serving as Budget Director for the Assembly Budget Committee and Deputy Executive Director for the Assembly Majority Office. As Treasurer, he will oversee New Jersey’s multi-billion-dollar budget, taxation, pensions, and investments, and manage a department of over 3,000 employees.

“New Jersey needs an experienced leader in the Treasury Department as we face extraordinary challenges from the Trump administration. That’s why I am excited to nominate Aaron Binder as our next Treasurer. Together, we will ensure that New Jerseyans’ tax dollars are being spent wisely, continue to fully fund our pension system, and work to invest in the programs that help families make ends meet. I look forward to working with Aaron to make smart financial decisions that lower costs and support our state’s economy,” said Sherrill.

“I am honored to be Governor-elect Sherrill’s State Treasurer nominee. During my time as Deputy Treasurer, I am proud to have worked on critical efforts to lower costs for New Jerseyans, like funding the pension system and implementing property relief tax programs to lower the cost of renting or owning a home. I look forward to working with the Governor-elect to continue building fiscally responsible budgets that invest in the future of our state, lowers costs for families, and ensure that New Jerseyans’ tax dollars are being spent wisely, efficiently and are invested in the areas that matter most," said Binder.
