Booker Statement on the Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine
Washington, DC — Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement ahead of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022:
“One year ago, Russia launched an illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
“Since then, we have seen the brutality of Putin’s military on full display. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced, and countless lives have been lost. From the cruel targeting of civilians — including children, journalists, and aid workers — to the destruction of medical facilities and infrastructure across Ukraine, it is clear that Russia is committing crimes against humanity.
“The devastating impacts of Putin’s unjustified war of choice also reaches beyond Ukraine. Russia’s blockade of Ukraine’s agricultural exports has exacerbated global food insecurity, leading to increased hunger and suffering around the world.
“Ukraine’s fight to protect its territorial sovereignty represents a larger, global struggle for democracy and freedom. On the frontline of that struggle are the people of Ukraine, and the world is in awe of their resilience and courage.
“The United States and our allies will continue to stand with the freedom-loving people of Ukraine who share our most fundamental ideals. Our commitment to the people of Ukraine and our shared values is unwavering.”
