Hoboken University Medical Center Announces Return to Normal Operation After Evacuation, Thanks State EMS Task Force For Assistance

HOBOKEN, NJ – Hoboken University Medical Center would like to thank the state EMS Task Force for their assistance in the successful evacuation of the hospital due to the fallout of a significant water main break in Hoboken; as well as Dr. Michael Russo, Hoboken’s 3rd Ward Councilman, and Keith Barksdale of the Municipal Hospital Authority Board for reaching out and offering support.

Over approximately 8 hours on Tuesday evening, the hospital was able to evacuate all patients in a safe and orderly manner and will be returning to normal operating conditions on Wednesday as water is restored in town. Carepoint Health’s sister hospitals, Christ Hospital and Bayonne Medical Center, expanded capacity and were able to provide continuity of services, which minimized care interruption and patient inconvenience.

“Residents of Hudson County deserve top-quality, reliable, and accessible care that is not for profit and allows reinvestment into the community, which is why CarePoint Health has consistently remained committed to being patient-centered and community-based as we continue to cement ourselves as leaders in what quality health care for all can look like. While the town may have aging infrastructure, we are modernizing and updating our facilities and capabilities to overcome challenges like this without fail,” said Chief Medical Officer of CarePoint Health Systems, John Rimmer, D.O. “I would like to thank state EMS agencies for their assistance during the evacuation and I am happy to report continued optimal patient care despite the challenging conditions as well as the return of all normal operating services this morning”.

Situations like this redemonstrate the vital importance of community hospital systems to the citizens of the region and the absolute necessity of cooperation between local and state agencies to optimize care and support for safety net hospitals. The prestigious Lown Institute, a healthcare think tank founded by a Nobel Prize Winner, recently named Hoboken University Medical Center #2 in New Jersey and #17 in the Nation for Community Benefit. Community crises like the unexpected loss of city infrastructure, the Covid19 pandemic, and Hurricane Sandy prove this hospital is a vital part of the fabric of our community.

Hoboken University Medical Center is once again accepting all 911/emergency patients and expects to return to baseline operating conditions today.
