New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Elected Vice Chair of National Governors Association

In a vote by his fellow governors Wednesday, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy was elected to help lead the National Governors Association as vice chairman. Gov. Murphy, who previously served as chair of the DGA, will oversee the organization alongside Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and work with governors across the country to provide solutions to the issues facing working families.

In a statement, Gov. Hutchinson welcomed Gov. Murphy to the role and praised his steady, bipartisan leadership, saying, “I look forward to working even closer with Gov. Murphy as he becomes Vice Chair of the National Governors Association. Gov. Murphy showed a steady hand of leadership during the pandemic and has proven he can work across the aisle to get things done.”

Gov. Murphy, who continues to receive strong approval ratings across partisan ideology, released the following statement on his election as Vice Chair:

“I look forward to working with fellow governors of both parties on issues such as recovery from the pandemic, infrastructure, the opioid crisis, broadband expansion, and workforce development,” Gov. Murphy said. “Gov. Hutchinson has been a leader on many bipartisan initiatives, including the expansion of broadband access to underserved communities, and I look forward to partnering with him in his role as NGA Chair over the course of the next year.”
