Rep. Payne, Jr. Supports Resolution to Investigate January 6th Capitol Insurrection
Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. voted for a House Resolution today to conduct a full investigation into the January 6th Insurrection on Capitol Hill. The resolution (H.Res. 503) creates a Select Committee to investigate and report on the facts and causes of the insurrection as well as make recommendations to prevent a similar domestic terrorist attack in the future.
“What happened on January 6th was a direct attack on American democracy,” said Rep. Payne, Jr. “We need to find out what happened, who was responsible, and what actions are necessary to keep it from happening again. The American people deserve to know the truth about this horrible attack.”
The January 6th attack damaged the U.S. Capitol Building, killed five people, injured more than 140 law enforcement officers, and forced several members of Congress and staff to move to secure locations. During the attack, a mob of former President Trump supporters raided the Capitol to try and stop the legal and traditional certification of votes after the valid and error-free 2020 U.S. Presidential election.
The Committee will have 13 members appointed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Five of the members will be appointed after consultation with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The resolution is the next step to investigate the insurrection after Senate Republicans blocked a popular and bipartisan bill (H.R. 3233) to establish an independent 9/11-type Commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection.
