Voter turnout is still a question mark as the election carries implications beyond Tuesday amid the coming struggles in the Statehouse for legislative dominance.  Here’s some background on key races:

LD2: A Stockton University poll released on Friday shows Assemblyman Chris Brown slightly ahead with a 3-pt lead over Senator Colin Bell in battleground LD2, while the Democratic Assembly candidates hold comfortable leads.

LD3: It’s been the most expensive battle in NJ legislative history – the NJEA/Grenier-Sweeney war. Who can forget that most memorable of days when Sweeney ally Senator Brian Stack brought in busloads of campaign workers from Union City to Bridgeton to assist the Senate President?

LD11: The marquee battleground race of the campaign season, incumbent Jen Beck says Phil Murphy’s ‘message has fallen flat‘ in her district, as she fends off a challenge by well-funded Democrat Vin Gopal. Polls have shown a dead-heat race among the two. Tammy Murphy diner hopped with Gopal and Assembly members Houghtaling and Downey on Sunday, while Beck and her running mates Acerra and Whelan actively campaigned over the weekend.

LD14: Senator Linda Greenstein is fending off a challenge against GOP candidate Ileana Schirmer under tragic circumstances, as her husband Michael passed away on Friday.

LD16: Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker, running with Roy Freiman, is fighting to fend off a challenge from former Assemblywoman Donna Simon and Somerset Freeholder Mark Caliguire. The two GOP candidates have attempted to portray Zwicker as an elitist intellectual, while Zwicker contends that, as a scientist, his record proves he legislates with an evidence-based approach.

LD25: The normally safe GOP district has been on Speaker Prieto’s DACC radar as Democratic see potential opportunity here.

LD38: Insiders say there’s tightened polling here, as cash flows into the Democratic challengers in neighboring LD39.

LD39: ELEC’s pre-election spending report shows a lot of money being spent for the Booker-endorsed Democratic legislative ticket. Speaker Prieto is all in with the challengers as he looks to knock off one or both GOP incumbents to gain a caucus ally; Holly Schepisi’s attorney sent a ‘cease and desist’ letter to her Democratic opponents over a campaign ad, while Robert Auth received a check from CD3 Rep. Tom MacArthur, who’s speculated as a future statewide contender.

Edison: Incumbent Mayor Tom Lankey is ready for game day today as he faces a challenge by former Democratic chairman Keith Hahn, who’s running as a Republican and has garnered the support of the NJEA as well as several other unions, turning Edison into a miniaturized LD3.

Atlantic City: GOP Mayor Don Guardian is facing a tight challenge from Councilman Frank Gilliam; Guardian presented what he said is evidence of voter fraud against the Democrats after his campaign sent an informant into opponent Gilliam’s campaign office.

Hoboken: a six-way race to replace retiring Mayor Dawn Zimmer became a hotzone of controversy in the final days as a unidentified flyer labeling Councilman Bhalla a ‘terrorist’ hit the streets, and was immediately and widely condemned by his fellow candidates.  Running are Council members Ravi Bhalla (endorsed by Zimmer), Jen Giattino, Mike DeFusco, Freeholder Anthony Romano, activist Ronald Bautista, and businesswoman Karen Nason.
