11:05AM (the morning after): Here are the general election match-ups and a special edition of Insider NJ’s Who’s Up And Who’s Down: Primary Election Day Edition


11:59PM: In CD5’s GOP primary, John McCann defeated Steve Lonegan. 


11:58PM: CD2 nominee Seth Grossman celebrates his victory.


11:23PM:  AC Mayor Frank Gilliam looks to be out as a county committee member – challenged by the fire chief  – he’s won by 4 votes at the polls but is down by 30 VBMs, according to a source.  


11:19PM:  In Stafford Township, conservative challengers won all seven seats, including the mayor’s seat, tonight in the GOP primary, defeating five incumbents, according to the APP.   


11:07PM:  With 73% reporting, John McCann currently has 52.4% while Steve Lonegan has 47.5% in the CD5 GOP primary.  


11:05PM:  At her victory celebration, Mikie Sherrill says ‘we need to send new leadership to Congress.’


11:01PM: Steve Lonegan crushed the PCCRO line in West Milford, taking out the local county committee and ticket candidates.  A source says the local GOP chairman will be out.  


10:55PM:  Jay Webber proclaims ‘we did it’ at his victory celebration.  


10:46PM:  The local GOP will change hands in Bridgewater tonight.  


10:45PM: The NRCC has endorsed Jay Webber in CD11 and Seth Grossman in CD2.  


10:23PM: In CD11’s GOP primary, Jay Webber has claimed victory; Tony Ghee called Webber to concede. 


10:20PM: The Union County Democrats got racked tonight on several local battlefronts.


10:16PM:  Lisa McCormick released a statement following her loss in the Democratic primary: ‘We made a strong showing for someone who was widely disrespected & ignored by the poltical establishment and main stream media. I got more votes than any runner-up in last year’s gubernatorial election & I look the same as yesterday. I am not going anywhere but I would like help’

10:14PM: HCDO chair candidate AMy DeGise released the following statement on the victories in WNY and Harrison: “Tonight, Democrats in West New York and Harrison delivered a strong statement the we will not allow our party to be taken over by the Stack machine and that we want progressive, inclusive leadership that puts everyone’s interests first, not just one city’s. I’m so excited about these tremendous victories and look forward to another win in one week when the Hudson County Democratic Organization votes for its next Chair. Congratulations to Congressman Sires, Mayor Fife and all of the great Democrats who made these victories possible.”


10:09PM: In CD4’s Democratic primary, Josh Welle beat Jim Keady. 


10:05PM:  Mikie Sherrill’s campaign celebrates at her headquarters:


10:03PM: First called by Harry Hurley, Seth Grossman wins the CD2 GOP primary in an unexpected victory, besting frontrunner Hirsh Singh.  Grossman has 7328 to Singh’s 5930, with 72 percent in.


9:59PM:  Incumbent Morris County Freeholder John Cesaro has lost.  


9:56pm:  In CD11’s GOP primary, With 17% reporting in Passaic County, Antony Ghee has 48.5% to closest rival Jay Webber’s 26.8%, while DeNeufville has 22%.  Ghee – so far – has a comfortable lead in the Passaic portion of the district.  With 50% in Morris reporting, Webber has 44.5%, DeNeuville has 34.5%, and Ghee has 10%.  In Essex, with 59% reporting, its close between Ghee (36.7%) and DeNeufville (34.5%), while Webber has 29.9%.  


9:49PM: Senator Bob Menendez has declared victory in the Democratic primary for US Senate against challenger Lisa McCormick  


9:48PM:  In CD7’s Democratic primary, Tom Malinowski has won.  


9:45PM:  Harry Hurley reports that Seth Grossman is leading Hirsh Singh in CD2’s GOP primary.


9:44PM: In CD11’s GOP primary, Webber is confident of victory, holding a slight lead over close-second DeNeufville, while everything is fluid at the moment.


9:36PM: Senator Jeff Van Drew has won the CD2 Democratic primary.  


9:35PM:  Mikie Sherrill has won the CD11 Democratic primary.  


9:28PM:  In Cape May County, Menendez has 46% to McCormick’s 54%, with 58% of the vote reported.  In Gloucester County, Menendez has 50.06% to McCormick’s 49.94%, with 99% of the vote reported – a difference of 18 votes. In Hunterdon, with 100% reporting, McCormick has 60.12% while Menendez has 39.88%.


9:22PM:  GOP Senate candidate Bob Hugin declared victory in the primary, with unofficial results showing him leading Brian Goldberg with 76% of the vote statewide.  


9:20PM: The NRCC released a statement on the CD3 Democratic primary.  


9:15PM: CD1 Rep. Norcross, predictably, is the winner in CD1, with 84%, to his challengers’ 16%.


9:13PM: Lisa McCormick is getting 43% in Monmouth County to Bob Menendez’s 57%.  From NBC Philadelphia, Menendez has 59% with McCormick at 41% statewide, with 34% reporting as of 9:11pm. 


8:57PM:  Michael Wildes beat Phil Meisner in Englewood’s Democratic mayoral primary, posting a 2-1 victory, receiving 2,719 votes to 1,437 for Meisner, with one district still outstanding, according to unofficla tallies. Wildes’ ten candidates for Democratic County Committee all won in their races.


8:51PM:  Mike Muller says that Senator Jeff Van Drew has won Gloucester County in the CD2 Dem primary. 


8:45PM: In Linden, incumbent Mayor Derek Armstead has won the primary, beating back challenges from Gretchen Hickey and Rhashonna Cosby.  


8:43PM: The HCDO held the line in West New York against Senator Stack’s insurgent slate, winning at least 50 out of 58 seats.   


8:38PM:  Harrison Mayor James Fife won re-election tonight, sweeping the county committee seats as well; Fife backs DeGise for HCDO chair.  


8:28PM: Battling Essex Executive DiVincenzo, Senator Codey won four seats in a local Democratic Party Committee fight in his home town of Roseland.


8:19PM:  In Lambertville, challenger Julia Fahl has defeated incumbent Mayor DelVecchio. ‘We put together a campaign of talking to every individual, and we built this campaign from the ground up,’ the victor told InsiderNJ.  She posted on Facebook: “Thank you, Lambertville! I am so incredibly honored by your support to be the Democratic nominee for Mayor of this city we love. Tonight is just the first step in our journey to make Lambertville an even better place to live, work, and raise a family. My deepest thanks and appreciation go out to all of you who believed in our message and vision for the future. Today’s record-setting turnout shows that our city is engaged and ready to move forward as one. Thank you for sharing your ideas, your passion, and your time and resources — you are what drove me every day throughout this campaign. I thank Mayor DelVecchio for a well-fought campaign, and for his service, and look forward over the coming months to bringing our party and city back together to ensure success in November and beyond. We started this conversation about our future together, and, together, we will keep it going!”


8:16PM: The Essex VBM numbers show Sherrill burying her nearest rival by 650 votes; Sherrill received 748 VBMs while Tamara Harris received 83.  


8:00PM: The polls are now closed.  Stay with us as we post the results as they come in from around the state.  


7:07PM: At his Totowa tavern, Peter Murphy says he wants Antony Ghee to win by 4,000 votes in the Passaic portion of CD11 – which makes up 40% of the district – while Morris officials talked of low campaign turnout, Murphy said ‘that’s unacceptable in Totowa’.


5:01PM: The numbers in heavily Democratic Lambertville – scene of a mayoral contest – at 4 p.m. were about to eclipse those of the gubernatorial election last year.  At 4 p.m., turnout was 1,114 with 123 VBMs.  The guv totals last year amounted to 1,373.


4:35PM:  In Sussex County, its light turnout today; County Clerk Jeff Parrott said 474 mail-in ballots were cast for the primary — 277 Republican ballots, 152 Democrat and 45 unaffiliated, one of the softest in the seven years Parrott has been county clerk, according to a report from NJ Herald.  


4:26PM: In Totowa, the heart of support for CD11’s Ghee – his hometown and Municipal Chair and soon-to-be-PCRO Chair Peter Murphy’s base – huddled with Murphy and LD40 Senator Corrado, discussing the voter performance in Totowa, saying its ‘pivotal’.  


4:18PM: Initial reports suggest sluggish turnout in CD11, prompting one GOP Morris official to remark ‘it’s just such a low-interest election, I’m amazed’, while Democratic candidates Mikie Sherrill and Tamara Harris marshall their forces once more for a final GOTV push in their primary.  Antony Ghee said  he’s ‘truly happy about how we ran the campaign. I made a pledge that I would not run a negative campaign and I held true to my word, despite the lies and untruths told about me.’


4:09PM: Hudson County View’s John Heinis reports on an incident in West New York where Mayor Felix Roque allegedly arrived on the scene of a traffic stop in North Bergen this morning after a Newark municipal vehicle was pulled over for hanging campaign signs – in violation of local municipal code, authorities said. 


4:06PM: Insider NJ columnist and Seton Hall Professor Dr. Matt Hale writes about the primary season in an ode to the middle.  


2:47: CD2 Democratic candidate Tanzi Youngblood got into the race before the LoBo retirement and before frontrunner Van Drew announced his candidacy – and despite Van Drew having all the lines, Youngblood says she feels confident, having been able to zero in on Van Drew’s stances on guns and public pension-benefits reform. 


2:27PM: GOP Senate candidate Bob Hugin released a mid-afternoon primary day video of voters from across the 21 counties – including an appearance by former GOP guv candidate Jack Ciattarelli – while Senator Menendez released a video earlier today, taking a swipe at Hugin, calling him a ‘greedy drug company CEO who ripped off cancer patients. 


1:23PM: In CD7, Democratic primary candidate and frontunner Tom Malinowski embraces a new experience: seeing his own name on the ballot, telling supporters its a ‘moving and powerful thing’.


1:06PM: In a Delaware River town of Lambertville, where incumbent DelVecchio faces a challenge from newcomer Fahl, turnout is ‘very high’, according to sources on the ground on both sides.  


11:58AM: Essex County Democratic Chairman Leroy Jones argues that while all the CD11 Dem candidates are ‘interesting and good’, Mikie Sherrill rises above the landscape ‘like a colossus’, and saying he hope to help heal the rift after the primary: ‘This was Tamara’s first foray to Essex County and politics in general, and I’m sure there were lessons learned, and I’m eager to talk to her to have reality checks.’


11:30AM: Running as an independent this year, incumbent Monmouth County Freeholder John Curley announced he’s filed over 400 petition signatures, saying he ‘won’t be bullied’ by county parties.


11:02AM: Rep. Bill Pascrell, facing token opposition in the CD9 primary, posted a FB pic of him and his wife Elsie voting this morning in Paterson.

 


10:59AM: Locked in a contentious three-way primary, Linden Mayor Derek Armstead’s campaign put out a video yesterday called ‘New Jersey Democrats Love Derek Armstead’, burnishing clips of speeches by Union County Freeholder Hudak (who’s actually in support of Hickey’s slate) and Senator Cryan.  UCDC Chair Scutari – also Senator and Linden municipal chair – is backing challenger Gretchen Hickey.

10:45AM: There’s a contested mayoral primary in Palisades Park: read this NorthJersey.com piece about the dynamics of the race.  


10:06AM: Running in the CD2 Democratic primary, frontrunner Senator Jeff Van Drew says he supports Governor Murphy’s conditional veto of A3122, a schools funding bill sponsored by Senate President Sweeney, saying it’s ‘unseemly to cut from one and give to another’.  Of primary opponent Youngblood, he says ‘I say this respectfully: she has a little bit to learn. Congress is a tough place, and you have to know how to navigate.’  Touting all eight county lines, Van Drew says he’s campaigned in all parts of the district.  


9:57AM: Hudson County View’s John Heinis has two articles on the late game dynamics in West New York, where there’s a county committee fight that factors into the HCDO chair war.  While Roque believes the local fight is ‘more like a skirmish‘, the Column A Democrats held a rally last night in support of Senator Menendez and Rep. Sires.  Assemblywoman Jimenez said ‘Senator Stack: stick to your district. That’s the 33rd district, not the 32nd

district.’  Last week, Roque – a Stack ally on opposite sides this time with Sires – said the veteran congressman ‘needs to retire in peace‘.  Sires, who has been pounding on doors in his home city, told Heinis he has no plans to retire.  Stack/Roque back an alternative slate of 56 candidates, while Sires backs 50 candidates on the line he shares with them.  See a breakdown of the WNY county committee fight here and who has the most to lose.    


9:37AM:  Of course, don’t forget to vote (though we’re pretty sure you’ve got it covered) – and take a listen to Bruce’s ‘Livin’ In The Future’, with the lines ‘woke up election day’ and ‘don’t worry, darlin’, no baby, don’t you fret, we’re livin’ in the future, and none of this has happened yet’.  For all the candidates who don’t make it through to the general, you gave it your best shot – as Bon Jovi put it ‘who says you can’t go home?’  At then end of the day, we’re all Jerseyans.

   


9:05AM: Newton Mayor Wayne Levante announced this morning that he’s filed petitions to run for freeholder in Sussex County this year.  


9:00AM: CD2 GOP moderate Rob Turkavage made his pitch directly to Rep. LoBiondo, landing at his front door while canvassing.  


8:45aAM: The late dynamics of CD11’s GOP primary: Ghee, holding the line in Essex and Passaic, hopes ideological purity will damage Webber, who early on branded of Ghee as an opportunist, while Ghee’s Friday press conference suggests he believe DeNeufville cut into his vote.  


7:45AM: There’s no battle like an intra-party battle when you’re a Jersey Democrat or Jersey Republican.

SENATE: With incumbent Senator Bob Menendez and GOP Senate candidate Bob Hugin both touting every county line, the presumptive nominees will cruise to victory tonight to become the party’s statewide standard-bearer for the November elections.

  • An FDU poll indicated it could be a close race, with Menendez holding a 4-point lead.
  • A January Menendez internal poll showed the incumbent with a 14-point lead over ‘any’ Republican
  • Self-financing former pharma executive Hugin has already poured over $7M into his campaign and prepared to spend upwards of $40M, according to reports.

Van Drew

CD2: GOP Rep. LoBiondo’s decision to retire opened the floodgates of hopefuls vying for the nomination to be his Republican successor, while Democrat Senator Jeff Van Drew – who had bided his time in LD1 – is the heavily-fortified favorite for the Democratic nomination, with all eight county party lines in his corner.

On the GOP side:

  • Former gubernatorial candidate Hirsh Singh is the frontrunner, with the bulk of the lines – and the taking the brunt of attacks from his rivals.
  • President Trump’s collision with the FBI has its counterpart in the primary, with Singh taking the pro-Trump view, saying Muellershould be fired immediately, while Turkavage vehemently disagrees, calling Singh’s rhetoric ‘inflammatory’.
  • On the campaign trail, Singh has vowed to minimize the influence of Murphy, while his rivals have lashed out at his family money.
  • A judge removed Brian Fitzherbert from the ballot, who slammed Singh as the source of the challenge, with Sam Fiocchi – Singh’s main rival at this point – jumping into the fray in defense of Fitzherbert. 
  • A judge ruled against Turkavage’s request that he use the Cumberland slogan, despite winning the convention.
  • Fiocchi has attacked Singh’s financial disclosure filing, and called on Singh to drop out of the race, while Singh’s campaign responded by highlighting Fiocchi’s lackluster fundraising.

LAMBERTVILLE: Mayoral primary candidate Julia Fahl insists on local positive messaging in the showdown with veteran incumbent Mayor DelVecchio, saying he’s done a good job, but ‘we could just be doing so much more’. With a lawn sign advantage of 2 to 1, Fahl looks confident and has the edge with Lambertville newcomers, but sources say while it looked like Fahl would cruise to a small but comfortable win, DelVecchio may have stabilized the race, as he attempts to avoid a similar fate that felled Belleville’s Kimble and Long Branch’s Schneider last month.

ENGLEWOOD: Mayoral primary candidate Michael Wildes was received the backing of LD37 Assemblyman Gordon Johnson, who said that Wildes ‘exemplifies the value of public service’, to succeed retiring incumbent Mayor Huttle, an allyof Wildes’ rival Phil Meisner. The two campaigns have gone head-to-head in recent weeks, with Meisner accusing Wildes of ‘running for Congress, not mayor, and Wildes accusing Meisner of only living in Englewood since 2015.  Meisner has blasted Wildes’ mayoral record, and attacked his ties to President Trump.
